Shingles is a common condition that causes a painful rash.  It can sometimes lead to serious problems such as long-lasting pain, hearing loss or blindness.  The shingles vaccine helps to protect you against shingles, reduce your chance of getting shingles and reduces your chance of getting serious problems if you do get shingles.

You can get shingles more than once, so it's important that you get vaccinated even if you have had shingles before.

The shingles vaccine is recommended for some older adults and people with a severely weakened immune system, including:

• People who turn 65 on or after 1st September 2023.
• People aged 70 to 79.
• People aged 50 or over with a severely weakened immune system.

If your age falls between these, you will be called in subsequent years as this is a rolling programme.

We will contact you when you become eligible for the shingles vaccine.  You should speak to us if you think you are eligible but haven't been contacted.

The seasonal flu vaccine is now available to people at risk of complications from flu and to people who care for them.

It is offered free on the NHS to people who:

• Are aged 65 and over.
• Have certain health conditions.
• Are pregnant.
• Are in long stay residential care.
• Receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick.
• Live with someone who is more likely to get infections.
• Are a child aged between 2 and 3 years on 31.8.23.
• Children from the age of 6 months with long-term health conditions.

Children in primary and secondary school will receive the vaccine in school if eligible.

Covid boosters will NOT be undertaken by the surgery.  New seasonal boosters for those eligible cohorts will be organised via NHS England.  Invite letters will indicate how to book these appointments.

For Berrycroft Community Health Centre patients who we know are housebound, we have submitted our list to the local covid vaccination team who are currently contacting patients and arranging these vaccinations.  Other eligible groups will follow according to the current criteria.
